How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?

Gutters should be cleared at least once a year — and twice a year if you have trees nearby or a mossy roof. An annual clear-out stops rainwater backing up into your walls, protects your fascias and roofline, and keeps the maintenance record your buildings insurer expects you to have.

Below we explain why once a year is the standard, the best time of year to book, why new-builds are often the worst offenders, and the situations where you genuinely need it more often.

How often should gutters be cleaned? The short answer

Once every 12 months for most UK homes. That is the interval the trade works to, and it is enough for a typical house with no trees overhanging the roof.

It makes no difference whether you have modern uPVC guttering or cast iron on a period property — the annual rule applies to both. What changes the answer is what is landing in the gutter, and how easily it drains away once it gets there.

Why once a year?

An annual clear-out protects four things:

Twelve months is the sweet spot: long enough to be practical, short enough that nothing has time to quietly go wrong.

When is the best time of year to clear gutters?

Late autumn, once the leaves are actually down — and before winter properly arrives.

That timing matters. Your gutters do their hardest work between November and March, and that is also when a blockage does the most damage, because trapped water freezes, expands and splits the run. Clearing them in November means you go into winter with a system that works.

The classic mistake is booking in early September, when half the leaves are still on the trees. The job gets done, the leaves come down in October, and you are blocked again by the first real downpour — having already paid.

If you clear twice a year, the second visit is best in late spring, once the blossom, seeds and nesting material have finished dropping.

Do new-build gutters need clearing in the first year?

Yes — and this surprises people, because a new roof has no moss on it.

New builds are often the worst offenders in year one. Construction debris, mortar droppings, sand, offcuts and packaging routinely end up in the guttering during the build and nobody clears it out before handover. On top of that, a brand-new tiled roof sheds a surprising amount of loose mineral grit as it weathers in. The first heavy winter is usually when it shows up — as an overflowing joint or a downpipe that has quietly cemented itself solid.

If your home is new, do not assume the gutters are clean because the roof is. Have them checked at the end of the first year.

When you need it more than once a year

For most homes, annual is enough. You should think about twice a year — or more — if:

If any of those apply, it is worth asking us whether a second visit makes sense for your property.

What should I do between cleans?

A bit of owner housekeeping goes a long way, and none of it requires a ladder:

None of this replaces a proper clear-out, but it tells you when something needs attention sooner.

The simplest way to never miss it — Roof Helpline plans

The hardest part of annual gutter clearing is not the job. It is remembering to book it, every single year, before the weather turns. That is exactly what our plans take off your plate. Roof Helpline is a proactive roof and gutter care service, and our plans are service and maintenance agreements (not insurance) that keep your home looked after automatically:

With either plan your yearly clean is booked and done, you have a dated record of it, and there is someone to call when something goes wrong. Plans run for a 12-month minimum term.

Never think about your gutters again. Call 0800 135 7663 — Mon–Fri 7am–5pm, and 24/7 for members — or email hello@roof-helpline.co.uk, and we’ll put your gutter care on autopilot.

Frequently asked questions

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At least once a year for most UK homes. Twice a year if you have overhanging trees, conifers nearby, or significant moss on the roof.

When is the best time to clear gutters?

Late autumn, once the leaves are down and before winter. If you clear twice a year, add a late spring visit after the blossom and seeds have dropped.

Can I leave it longer than a year?

You can, but it is where the trouble starts. Compacted moss, standing water and winter frost do most of their damage in the runs that have been left, and the resulting damp and rot cost far more than the clean.

Do new-build gutters need clearing?

Yes. Construction debris and loose tile grit routinely sit in new guttering from day one, and it usually shows up in the first winter.

How long does a gutter clean take?

Usually 30 to 90 minutes for a standard house, longer for larger properties, difficult access, or gutters that have not been cleared in several years.

Does moss on my roof affect my gutters?

Very much so. Roof moss is the biggest single cause of blocked gutters in the UK — it breaks off, washes down and compacts. If your roof is mossy, plan on twice a year.
